A future proof open source learning experience

The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft is the largest in Europe and is globally renowned for its leading architecture programs and groundbreaking research. With a strong focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and international collaboration, the faculty plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the built environment.

The Briefing

The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Library of TU Delft faced a significant challenge: how to create a platform that consolidates fragmented educational content and makes it accessible to both teachers and students. Learning materials and tutorials were scattered across multiple locations, leading to inefficiency and frustration. Teachers lacked a central place to manage their materials, while students struggled to find relevant information.

To solve this problem, there was a need for a platform that centralizes all educational content and makes it accessible. The platform needed to be flexible enough to optimally support blended learning – a combination of classroom and online education. Additionally, the solution had to be open source, so other faculties within the university and educational institutions worldwide could benefit from it.

Workshops and Co-Creation as a Starting Point for Success

Through a Service Blueprint process, the needs and expectations of all stakeholders were thoroughly analyzed. Stakeholders, including teachers, students, and administrators, were central to this phase. Through co-design sessions, we brought together diverse perspectives and gathered valuable insights.

Prototyping for Valuable Insights

Based on the insights from the Service Blueprint process, we developed an initial prototype of the platform, with special attention to the Teacher Dashboard. This dashboard was designed to provide teachers with an intuitive, user-friendly environment where they can easily manage learning materials. During extensive user testing, we collected valuable feedback, which was directly integrated to further optimize functionalities.

Design and Technology Integrated for Optimal Scalability

To streamline the user experience, we developed a comprehensive design system with reusable components. This ensured consistency in branding and functionality and laid the foundation for a renewed environment that aligns with TU Delft’s look and feel, ready for the future. Both teachers and students can easily navigate the platform.

Measurable Results Since Launch

DigiPedia has had an immediate impact on the Faculty of Architecture and the Library. Since its launch, thousands of users have gained access to the platform. Teachers now have an intuitive interface for managing and sharing learning materials, while students report an improved learning experience. The platform is now seen as an essential tool that makes education within the faculty more efficient and effective.

Thanks to DigiPedia’s open-source nature, knowledge sharing has expanded like never before. The platform seamlessly aligns with the goals of Open Education by making educational content available to a broader audience. Additionally, its scalable architecture offers opportunities for future expansions, such as the development of AI technologies.
